President Romo helps student move into Chisholm HallWeek of Welcome Begins as Students Return for Fall Semester

(Aug. 23, 2001)--The second annual Week of Welcome (WoW) began today with UTSA on the Move at Chisholm Hall on the 1604 Campus. UTSA President Ricardo Romo was on hand to help some students move into the residence hall.

Information tables and refreshments were also at the site. The welcoming event continues Friday, Aug. 24, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., at University Oaks apartments on the 1604 Campus.

Members of the Tri-Campus community are invited to welcome students to campus by assisting them with their moves into campus housing.

Faculty, staff and student organizations are invited to both events to distribute information about their programs and to pass out snacks to new and returning students. WoW continues through Thursday, Aug. 30 at the 1604 and Downtown Campuses.

Events over the weekend will include:

"Be Safe!" presentations by UTSA Police will address safety and crime prevention issues 9 a.m.-12:50 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 25, at University Oaks Apartments Phase III Club House. Different topics will be discussed every 30 minutes, including crime prevention tips, sexual assault and basic defense, work/telephone/ATM safety tips, home safety tips and Alcohol 101.

"Finding Your Classes" will provide information Sunday, Aug. 26, 2-4 p.m. at the Sombrilla to help students find their classrooms the day before classes begin.

"Sportz Day" at University Oaks apartments from 2-5 p.m., will be sponsored by Wellness and Recreation. Staff will facilitate sports activities for all students, including sand volleyball, pool games, 3 on 3 basketball and picnic games.

The first day of fall classes, Monday, Aug. 27, opens with New Student Information Tables set up at the HSS Building on the 1604 Campus from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Orientation leaders will be on hand to answer questions to help new students get around campus. New Student Information Tables will also be available at the Downtown Campus 8 a.m.-1 p.m. and 4-6 p.m. at the Durango Building Information Desk and in the Commons Area. Giveaways, refreshments and maps will be available.

Welcome events on Monday include Roadrunner Parking Perks (lots 1 and 5, 7:30-9:30 a.m. and 5-6:30 p.m.), where students can pick up sports schedules; WoW Kick Off and Recreation Tourney (Sombrilla, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.), a welcome by President Ricardo Romo and Student Government President Shelli Lyons and Wellness and Recreation will bring out the basketball goal for some sports activities; Boo Boo Bunnies Service Project (Sombrilla, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.), a table sponsored by the VOICES organization will provide the opportunity to make stuffed-animal ice packs to be used at hospitals and children's shelters; President's All-Campus Fall Celebration and Roadrunner Camp Reunion (Convocation Center east lawn, 5-8 p.m.), an opportunity to meet faculty and staff; and Howdy Rowdy Bash (Convocation Center patio, 8-11 p.m.), the first dance of the school year.
