Downtown Campus drivers surprised with traffic citations

(Dec. 5, 2001)--Several members of the Downtown Campus community recently have received traffic citations for making illegal right turns from the inside, eastbound lane of Durango Boulevard onto S. Pecos-La Trinidad. But, they may not have realized their turns were illegal.

The confusion has been attributed to a traffic sign placed just a few months ago near the stop sign across from the Radisson Hotel. The sign indicates that a right turn cannot be made from the inside, eastbound lane to S. Pecos-La Trinidad.

There are two outside lanes that service traffic exiting from the IH-10 ramp, and it is permissible to make a right turn from either of these lanes. However, these lanes are for traffic exiting the expressway only.

Drivers should note there is a solid white line separating the inside lane from the two lanes servicing expressway motorists. It is illegal to cross this white line and move to the right from the inside, eastbound lane. Likewise, it is illegal for traffic exiting the expressway to cross the white line and come into the inside, eastbound lane.

The new traffic regulations are intended to help exiting expressway traffic merge safely onto Durango while allowing continuing eastbound traffic to move forward without having to stop for merging traffic from the expressway.

So, drivers going to the Downtown Campus should remember to drive safely, and keep these regulations in mind as you plan your approach to the Durango Loop parking lot or to the lot located beneath the expressway. The fine is a steep one -- close to $200!
