workers prepare stage for commencement workers prepare stage for commencement
Facilities services employees from the 1604 Campus, Downtown Campus and Institute
of Texan Cultures worked Thursday morning to prepare the Convocation Center for
Saturday's graduation ceremonies.

Preparation nearly complete for Saturday's commencement

(Dec. 14, 2001)--With less than 24 hours to go until Saturday's commencement, facilities services employees from all of the Tri-Campuses are putting the finishing touches on preparation for December 2001 Commencement at the UTSA Convocation Center. The final inspection will take place Friday.

The transformation begins with the laying of plastic puzzle pieces on the floor to protect the basketball court. The workers then turn their attentions to the stage, chairs and other related preparations for the ceremonies.

A stage that takes four hours for four workers to assemble was a recent cost-saving purchase. The 16 labor hours to set up the new stage are a big contrast to the previous stage that took double that amount of time and 256 labor hours. In addition to the facilities services efforts, the grounds and maintenance personnel are also doing their part before, during and after the event.

"Since we are all in the student business, we need to provide the students and their families an experience that will not be forgotten by creating an environment that is suitable, safe and clean. This supports what I strongly feel is the most important event at UTSA -- commencement," said Joe Rubio, assistant director of maintenance and custodial services.

After the final ceremony is complete, the workers will clear the Convocation Center floor so the UTSA basketball team will be able to practice Sunday morning. Both the Convocation Center and PE buildings will be back to normal by Monday morning.
