San Antonio communication major is 50,000th UTSA graduate
(Dec. 14, 2001)--The 50,000th graduate of the University of Texas at San Antonio is communication major Corisanda Holtz. She will receive a lifetime membership and commemorative items from the UTSA Alumni Association at Saturday's commencement.
"I am proud, not only to be graduating, but also to be recognized as the 50,000th graduate," said Holtz. "It is a long-awaited goal I am accomplishing, and as I walk across the stage I will not soon forget what I have achieved."
The first of her immediate family to graduate from college, Holtz, 25, was born in Okinawa, Japan and raised as an "Army brat." She has spent most of her life in San Antonio and always called it home. The daughter of Jean and Frederick Holtz, she has two older brothers, Jason, 30 and Kai, 28, who also live in the city.
A 1994 Roosevelt High School graduate, Cori attended Texas Tech University and San Antonio College, then transferred to UTSA in 1999. At UTSA, Holtz served on the Paisano staff as campus coordinator, as well as working in editing, writing and advertising.
She worked her way through school as a daycare teacher, department store stocker, car wash cashier and typesetter, and now plans to apply to Teach For America, a non-profit organization that places recently graduated teachers in public schools for two years. The teaching positions offer the opportunity to have an impact on children's lives and give back to the community.
Eventually, Holtz plans to pursue a master's degree in communication disorders and speech pathology.
