
UTSA mathematics and statistics professor Manuel Berriozabal
UTSA professor to speak at mathematics conference Jan. 9
(Dec. 20, 2001)—University of Texas at San Antonio mathematics and statistics professor Manuel Berriozabal has been selected as the keynote speaker for the joint mathematics meetings of the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) on Jan. 9 in San Diego.Berriozabal's presentation will offer discussion of a variety of programs and practices to improve the quality of mathematics education in the United States. His discussion will center on outreach programs for precollege and college students that particularly have an impact on students from minority groups underrepresented in mathematics-related areas.
Berriozabal, organizer and founding director of the UTSA Prefreshman Engineering Program since 1979, will provide an historical account of the operation and results of the program which has been replicated across Texas and the U.S. He will also discuss other programs and events with which he has been involved.
Four thousand mathematicians are expected to attend the conference. Other professional organizations scheduled to participate include the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, the Association for Women in Mathematics, the National Association of Mathematicians and the Association for Symbolic Logic.
The joint mathematics meetings are held for the purpose of advancing mathematical achievement, encouraging research and providing the communication necessary to progress in the field. The meetings serve to preserve, supplement and utilize the results of the research of mathematicians worldwide.
Founded in 1888 to further mathematical research and scholarship, the 30,000 member American Mathematical Society fulfills its mission through programs and services that promote mathematical research and its uses, strengthen mathematical education, and foster awareness and appreciation of mathematics and its connections to other disciplines and to everyday life.
