"Mirror Maps" multimedia art exhibit opens at Satellite Space

(Dec. 5, 2001)--The UTSA Department of Art will present "Mirror Maps," an exhibit of multimedia works by local artist and master of fine arts degree candidate Juan Miguel Ramos from Dec. 7-23 at the UTSA Satellite Space at the Blue Star Arts Complex at 115 Blue Star (S. Alamo and Probandt).

A San Antonio native, Ramos' work reflects his interest in his hometown. The main subjects of his artwork are friends and their experiences in San Antonio. Ramos also incorporates images in his art inspired by Chicana/o culture.

"It seems to me that a person can be pocho, Tejano, indigenous, mainstream American, Mexican, punk rocker and Chicana/o all at once. I try to express this in my work by repeating images and superimposing different drawings, photos or text," said Ramos.

"For me, combining drawn figures with photographic backgrounds is like playing with imagination and memory respectively in order to offer reflections of the city [San Antonio],” Ramos added.

The opening reception is free and open to the public from 6-9 p.m., Dec. 7. The exhibit will remain on view through Sunday, Dec. 23.

Gallery hours are 12-6 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Admission is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the UTSA Satellite Space at (210) 212-7146.
