"Technology Works!" brings students from across South Texas
(Dec. 7, 2001)--More than 600 middle and high school students from across South Texas visited the UTSA 1604 Campus Thursday as part of the first ever, "Technology Works! Campus Enrichment Day" for TRIO and GEAR UP students.
The purpose of the day was to inform students about the educational background they would need to prepare for a career in the medical or technology fields. Students were able to take part in hands-on experiments and demonstrations presented by representatives from leading technology and healthcare-related organizations. The students were provided with information about the job responsibilities that go along with the professions.
The U.S. Department of Education TRIO programs provide educational opportunities for low-income and first generation college-bound students. The programs include Upward Bound, Educational Talent Search, Student Support Services, Educational Opportunity Centers and the McNair Scholars Program.
GEAR UP is based on a five year Department of Education grant that earmarks economically disadvantaged middle school students to help them achieve academic success and prepare for college. Parents and students in the program are informed about financial aid options and various support services that create an environment for students to succeed. Support services range from mentoring programs to career testing. A student scholars program is also provided to help financially prepare them for college.
Organizations represented at the event included: University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Texas Department of Transportation, MITRE Corp., Dell Computer, San Antonio Water System and Raytheon Corp.
