Twenty UTSA student-athletes have been named to the spring 2001 Southland Conference
All-Academic teams. Student-athletes who have completed at least one full year
at their respective university and earned at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point
average through the fall semester qualify for the teams. In addition, the student-athlete
must be a letterwinner at her institution.Topping the list for UTSA was senior softball player Monica Briggs,(pictured left), who was earlier selected for the Verizon Academic All-America District VI Team. An outfielder, Briggs (3.37, biology) led the conference in home runs with 12.Also selected from the Roadrunner softball team was Monica's twin sister, Denise, who just completed her fourth letter-winning season as a pitcher at UTSA.
Also a Verizon Academic All-America District team member, Chelsea DeMarte, topped four women's basketball players who were also named. DeMarte was joined by seniors Sarah Brock and Genny Garcia, as well as junior Katrina Dorsey. Baseball was represented by San Antonio natives Bobby Alford and Link LeGrand, as well as Brette Parrish from New Braunfels and Hunter Wenzel of Boerne.
Eight student-athletes from the UTSA track and field teams also earned a spot on the list, with Cara Cooper, Jessica Fowler, Kylene O'Connor, Samantha Perez, Theresa Perez and Katie Poindexter from the women's team, while James Cantu and Santos Gonzales represented the men.
