Carwash Will Help UTSA Student Create Scholarship for Fellow Sophomores
Carwashes are a staple fundraising activity, but not every activity benefiting
from them is as unique as the Sara M. Gonzales Sophomore Scholarship.
UTSA student Sara Gonzales is creating the $1,000 scholarship fund, with half
being awarded this fall and half next spring. The major requirement for the
two recipients is that they must be sophomores.
Gonzales, who is also a sophomore and a first-generation college student,
explained, "I felt that a lot of scholarships are given to first time
freshman and students who have an established major. There aren't enough scholarships,
or maybe not any scholarships, that target sophomore students. There is nothing
greater than sharing with your peers the excitement of being a scholarship
recipient."
And Gonzales should know. She is the recipient of scholarships from the San
Antonio Education Partnership, EG&G Management Services/UTSA, the ACE
Scholarship Program and the World Affairs Council of San Antonio.
"I wanted to give someone else the opportunity to continue with their
education," said Gonzales.
Gonzales, a Harlendale High School graduate, is very active in campus life
at UTSA. She is sophomore representative to the Student Government Association
and a former chair of the UTSA Downtown Student Government Ad Hoc Committee.
The carwash benefiting Gonzales scholarship is scheduled 10 a.m.-5 p.m. July
21 at the Firestone Tire and Service Center located at 7203 San Pedro Ave.
Get your wheels washed for $7, and get $7 off on an oil change.
Volunteers are needed to assist Gonzales as she pursues her goal. If you would
like to volunteer, contact Sara M. Gonzales at (210) 264-4247 or via e-mail.
