PREP
Students Learn About The Fun Side of Science
More than 1,000 middle and high school students came to UTSA last week for the third annual Engineering and Science Extravaganza.
The conference was hosted by the Society of Mexican American Engineers and Scientists (MAES) for participants in the Prefreshman Engineering Program (PREP) who came from across Texas.
Ford Motor Company, DuPont and Alamo Workforce Development were major sponsors of the event. More than 34 organizations were represented at the conference where young people learned about science and engineering in hands-on learning sessions.
A benefit golf tournament was held June 14 at Golf Clubs of Texas in conjunction with the extravaganza. The tourney was organized to raise money for MAES scholarships, and it is hoped that it will become an annual event.
The Extravaganza has seen tremendous growth over the last three years. The first event consisted of 300 PREP students and 12 presenters. The second had 800 students and 34 presenters.
