UTSA's Minority Business Development Corporate Advocate of the Year Recognized for 12 Years of Service on the CPS Board
Gloria Leal Hernandez was honored Tuesday night at the Downtown Campus for her 12 years of service as a trustee on the City Public Service Board. Hernandez has served as chairman and vice-chairman of the CPS board during her tenure.
As a board member, Hernandez has been a steward of the CPS Supplier Diversity Office which increased opportunities for minority and women-owned businesses. Accolades during her business career include, Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Business Success Series, the U.S. Department of Commerce's Minority Retail Firm of the Year and the San Antonio Women's Hall of Fame.
Hernandez is the owner of Suchy's Flowers & Gifts, a family owned business since 1913 at 955 Cincinnati Avenue, on the city's South side.
Hernandez is a UTSA Development Board member and a former UTSA Minority Business Development Corporate Advocate of the Year. She was also influential in encouraging Lo Bello de San Antonio Women's Club to support the Downtown Scholarship Initiative in 1997. The club's scholarship contributions have increased annually over the last four years.
One of the scholarship recipients, Dehlia Sanchez was also on hand for the reception to thank Gloria for her hard work to give her the opportunity to obtain a college education. Distinguished guests included Mayor Ed Garza, former Mayor Lila Cockrell and fellow CPS board members.
