Administrator Helps Student Athletes Succeed in Athletic and Academic Arenas

Dan Kaderli, assistant athletic director for academic services, says that summer is busier than ever as new students stream onto campus for orientation and enrollment.

Kaderli’s job in the athletic department centers on working with nearly 200 freshman and transfer student-athletes to be certain they are progressing in their academic careers and are in compliance with their degree requirements. He checks in periodically with the students’ major advisers to maintain communication and help resolve problems.

Kaderli, who has been at UTSA since 1983, also teaches composition in the English department. He says it’s an advantage to be a faculty member and an administrator because it allows you see different aspects of university life.

"I’m proud of how we’ve handled things over the years. We’ve gotten good ratings from the National Collegiate Athletic Association. We have always stressed being forthright."

He adds that he is particularly proud of the men’s tennis team because of their average GPA of 3.54. Besides winning the season championship last spring, four of the eight tennis players were on the Dean’s List. Two of the four team members had perfect 4.0 GPAs. Students must have a 3.75 GPA to be on the Dean’s List.

Kaderli, who was named UTSA’s Most Outstanding Faculty Member in the 2001 University Life Awards, is known in the region for his dramatic portrayal of poet Edgar Alan Poe, which he has presented at fund-raising events for organizations such as the International English Honors Society and United Way. He is currently developing a new portrayal of poet Robert Frost.
