UTSA hosts cross country invitational this weekend

(Sept. 21, 2001)--The Whataburger/UTSA Invitational will welcome more than 3,000 high school and collegiate runners this weekend. Fourteen high school teams currently ranked in the top 10 in the state.

Eight boys teams ranked by Texas Track and Field for Sept. 13 are scheduled to compete. Defending state champions Lockhart (4th in current 4A poll) and Premont (1st in 2A) are in the field. In addition, Boerne (10th in Class 4A), Tuloso-Midway (2nd in 4A), Robstown (8th in 4A), Corpus Christi Carroll (9th in 5A), Yoakum (6th in 3A) and Kingsville Academy (2nd in 1A) will participate.

The girls' division will have six teams currently ranked. Leading the group will be last year's 3A state champs, Llano (2nd in current 3A poll). McAllen Rowe (10th in 5A), New Braunfels (3rd in 4A), Boerne (8th in 4A0, Premont (5th in 2A) and Nueces Canyon (6th in 1A) are also ready to run on Saturday.

The University/College division is slated for Friday at 6 p.m. UTSA will host Incarnate Word, Palo Alto, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Trinity, Texas A&M-Kingsville and Trinity.

The UTSA men's team placed second at the Joe Richardson Invitational in Nacogdoches on Monday. Sophomore Henry Maruping finished second with a 27:00.0 on the 5-mile course along the Piney Woods Country Club, the site of the 2001 SLC Cross Country Championships Oct. 29. Senior Tyler Keen (27:48.0) was eighth and sophomore Clifton Tierney (28:07) placed 10th.
