Local artists contribute works for Luna memorial scholarship

(April 1, 2002)--Almost three dozen local artists are donating work for an auction that will benefit the Sen. Gregory Luna Memorial Endowed Scholarship at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Organized by Leticia Ann Luna, daughter of the late senator, the auction will be April 6 at the UTSA Downtown Campus in the Buena Vista Street Building Meeting/Assembly Room. Viewing and silent bidding will begin at 6 p.m. and conclude at 8 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

"I am deeply appreciative for the wonderful group of artists who are so generously supporting my father's dream of making a college degree possible for those who might not pursue one without the financial assistance provided by scholarships," Leticia Ann Luna said.

Artists contributing pieces are: Arturo Almeida, Lisa Alvarado, Fernando Andriacci, Ericka Arciniega, Rolando Briseno, Andy Benavides, Gilberto Cardenas, Olga Cardona, Miguel Cortinas, Alba De Leon, Juan Farias, Piedad Flores, Daniel Guerrero, Carol Hatch, Adan Hernandez, Rick Hunter, Joe Lopez, Ariana Luna, Ben Mata, Neil Maurer, Cesar Martinez, Lori Noll, Cruz Ortiz, Rainey, Juan Ramos, Diana Rodriguez, Armando Sanchez, Ramin Samandari, Irma Ibarra Smith, Jesse Trevino, Louis Trevino, Vincent Valdez, Anita Valencia, Kathy Vargas, Jan Velayas, Olivia Villanueva, Joe Villarreal and Joanna Armijo Zamarron.

Established by family, friends, former legislative colleagues and constituents of the longtime Texas legislator, the scholarship effort began shortly after Luna's death in November 1999, and the endowment was announced Nov. 17, 2000, Luna’s birthday. A portion of the fund is earmarked for Lanier High School graduates.
