ITC presents annual Bowie Street Blues concert April 28
(April 16, 2002)--The Institute of Texan Cultures (ITC) invites blues and Fiesta fans from across the state to the 15th annual Bowie Street Blues concert from noon-7 p.m. Sunday, April 28 outdoors on the "Back 40."
The concert, an official Fiesta San Antonio event, features some of the best traditional and contemporary blues artists that Texas has to offer. The lineup includes The Jerusalem Gospellaires, Eddie and the All-Niters, Rocky Benton, Murry Woods and Tangled Blue, and Texas Johnny Brown.
For nearly 30 years, The Jerusalem Gospellaires have delivered ministry through song. Formed from the male chorus of Jerusalem Baptist Church, the group brings a unique blend of gospel and blues with an irresistible rhythm.
In Texas, if you pick up an electric guitar in public, you better know how use it -- and Eddie Polanco knows how to use an electric guitar! Eddie and the All-Niters have developed a potent repertoire that fuses obscure and classic blues with Eddie's originals. This fusion has been stirring crowds since the '80s.
At the age of six, Rocky Benton received his first harmonica, and there was no turning back -- he was performing professionally by the age of ten. Rocky's rousing presence on stage is as unique and special as his sound. Through powerful and unique vocals, his interpretation of blues and Motown always rocks the house.
For more than 20 years, Murry Woods has astounded audiences with a mix of blues and rock that keeps people off their chairs and on the dance floor. His music gives to the new millennium what Hendrix gave to the '60s.
Texas Johnny Brown is truly one of the legendary figures of the American blues scene. His distinctive guitar style and compositions have graced recordings since the late 1940s, ranging from Mississippi Delta blues to contemporary R&B. His continuing contribution to the blues has won him critical acclaim in both America and Europe.
Admission to Bowie Street Blues is $6 for adults and $3 for children, 3-12 years old. UTSA staff and students, and children 2 and under are admitted free. A Bowie Street Blues ticket includes admission to the ITC Exhibit Floor, which showcases the history of 26 ethnic groups that founded the state of Texas.
Food and beverages will be sold at Bowie Street Blues, but no ice chests or pets will be allowed on the grounds. Visitors are encouraged to arrive early and bring a lawn chair or blanket to secure best seating on the berm.
The Institute of Texan Cultures, one of the three campuses of the University
of Texas at San Antonio, is an educational center concerned with the history
and diverse cultures of Texas. Open Tuesday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.,
ITC is located in downtown San Antonio. For more information call (210) 458-2300,
