UTSA Spring 2002 Commencement set for May 11

(April 17, 2002)--UTSA Spring 2002 Commencement will be Saturday, May 11 in the Convocation Center on the 1604 Campus. More than 1,700 graduation candidates representing six UTSA colleges are expected to participate. Each ceremony will be broadcast live on Time Warner Cable education channel 19.

The ceremony for the College of Education and Human Development and the College of Sciences will be at 9 a.m. with Gale Norton, U.S. Secretary of the Interior as keynote speaker.

The College of Liberal and Fine Arts and College of Public Policy ceremony is set for 1 p.m. with San Antonio Mayor Ed Garza as keynote speaker to the new graduates.

The final ceremony of the day for the College of Business and College of Engineering will be at 5 p.m. with a keynote speech by Marian Sokol, founder of Any Baby Can.

Norton, a longtime public servant and conservationist, is the first woman to head the Department of the Interior, a 151-year-old federal agency. As attorney general in Colorado, she helped negotiate the $206 billion national tobacco settlement, representing Colorado and 45 other states as a part of the largest lawsuit settlement in history.

Garza is serving his first term as San Antonio mayor. He was formerly a City Councilman.

Sokol is founder of Any Baby Can of San Antonio. Founded in 1982, Any Baby Can is a support center for families of young children with critical and chronic illness and other disabling conditions. The organization's free services have helped many families in Bexar and 11 surrounding counties.
