Free Latin dance class to be offered April 16 at UTSA
(April 10, 2002)--Dance instructors from Salon Mexico Dance Instruction will swing their way to the UTSA 1604 Campus at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, to teach "Fiesta Dancing 101" Latin dance classes just in time for the start of Fiesta fun. The class, sponsored by the UTSA Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), will be in the University Center Laurel Room (2.01.28). The event is free and open to the public and refreshments will be available.
"Fiesta Dancing 101" is for beginners interested in learning the basic moves of popular Latin dances such as Salsa, Tango and Mambo. Salon Mexico instructors will teach the basics the first hour of class. Students will then practice their lessons with a partner.
Salon Mexico offers free classes each week and dances Friday nights, often
with live music, at the Incarnate Word Retirement Center. Classes and dances
include Salsa, Bolero, Tango, Swing, Danzon and other Latin dance styles.
"With Fiesta just around the corner, the class at UTSA will benefit people
who not only enjoy Latin dancing, but care about the culture behind it,"
said Salon's director Aaron Bussey. "That's part of celebrating
Fiesta. We are also trying to make our program more multi-generational and
attract younger people to our regular weekly classes to not only teach them
Latin dancing in a smoke-free, equal-opportunity environment, but also to
raise their awareness of Latin dance history."
Salon Mexico, a nonprofit volunteer program promoting cultural interchange between Mexico and the United States, has taught Latin dancing in San Antonio for three years and is sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word.
As part of the exchange, Salon takes dance groups to Mexico City several times each year to experience the ambiance of the "salones de baile" and learn from teachers and dancers there. Volunteers work with a local 14-piece tropical orchestra, "Corazon," bringing music and musicians from Mexico and writing arrangements in the style of the Mexico City Danzonera orchestras.
