UTSA debate team places in national tournament
(April 11, 2002)--The UTSA debate team finished its season last week with a strong showing in the Cross Examination Debate Association (CEDA) National Championship Debate Tournament at California State University-Fullerton. Two Roadrunner teams competed in the field of 210 teams from across the nation.
Kate Richey, a San Antonio junior and Clark High School graduate, and Jeremy Stevens, a San Antonio senior and Taft High School graduate, tied for seventh place in the tournament. Stevens won the 17th Speaker Award out of 420 contestants.
Marty Golando, senior transfer student from the University of Chicago, and his partner, Terrell Baptiste, a Houston freshman, posted a fifty-fifty record, narrowly missing advancement to elimination rounds.
"These awards were a real coup for the students and UTSA," said Skip Eno, debate coach and communication lecturer. "Now that the official debate season has ended, while the team anxiously awaits its final national ranking, the debaters turn their attention to classes, a reinvigoration of their personal lives and a look forward to next year, wondering what topic will provide the next challenges."
UTSA teams defeated teams from Florida State University, Rochester University, Macalister College, CSU-Fullerton, Louisville University, U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Cornell University, William Jewell College, Washington University (St. Louis), and Wichita State University.
Richey and Stevens lost their final elimination round in a close decision
to a team from Kansas State University.
