Spring 2002 graduates invited to La Despedida ceremony
(April 26, 2002)--UTSA students who will graduate this semester or who completed their degrees in December 2001 are invited to take part in the 7th Annual La Despedida Graduation Ceremony at 7:30 p.m. May 11 at the Downtown Campus.
The ceremony, which has become a tradition at UTSA, is a bilingual celebration of the support of family and community in the attainment of college degrees by the university's Hispanic students. It follows the official UTSA commencement exercises each spring, honoring Hispanic graduates for the academic year. "La despedida" is Spanish for "farewell party."
Students and faculty will wear full commencement regalia for the event. Students or faculty who wish to participate in the ceremonies should e-mail La Despedida event chair Sonia Quirino or faculty member Rudy Rosales.
Donations are also needed to help fund the event, which will include mariachis and will be followed by a reception.
Sponsored by the student organization MASSO, La Despedida is open to the
public.
