Ceremonies to honor outstanding student teachers for Spring 2002

(April 30, 2002)--The College of Education and Human Development (COEHD) will honor UTSA's outstanding student teachers for the spring semester during "Induction to the Profession Ceremonies" at 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 1 at the 1604 Campus in the University Center Retama Auditorium. The Tri-Campus community is invited to share in this unique event which will feature a video tribute to teaching.

UTSA is the single largest provider of teachers in the San Antonio area, according to COEHD Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies Nancy Martin. Each semester, the university has some 300 to 400 pre-service, student teachers working in area schools.

Based on appraisals done by the student teachers' cooperating classroom teacher and COEHD supervisor plus an essay on how the student teaching experience has prepared the student for the future, 38 student teachers were nominated for their outstanding work and "classroom promise."

Three finalists have been selected, one from each certification leve l-- elementary, secondary or all-level.

Nominees are Gilbert Berghauser, Gina Chavez, Darrell Clarke, Ann Mary Coleman, Jill DeBarros, Crystal Diaz, Claudia Faulkner, Mary Friday, Lisa Garrie, Monique Garza, Michelle Haby, Amy Haywood, Christina Henninger, Holly Elena Hyde, Lorelei Juarez, Kari Kobyluch, Sylvie Kramer, Patricia Lozano, Maribel Martinez, Tanice McGarity, Jill Miller, Candice Moore, JoAnn Moser, Rene Paez, Tashai Pogue, Kay Portillo, Mike Previte, Jessica Reyes, Dorothy Riley, April Rivera, Jamie Rosanno, Veronica Schmittou, Ana Sotomayor, Sarah Speck, Lisa Tillerson, Sonia Tonsul, Judith Torres and Dawn Worley.
