UTSA rewards service with University Life Awards

(April 12, 2002)--The University of Texas at San Antonio Student Government Association has announced recipients of the 2002 University Life Awards, honoring outstanding service to UTSA by students, faculty, staff and registered student organizations.

Students recognized were: freshman Firoozeh Khordadie, sophomore Sara Gonzales, junior Kristy Pacheco, seniors Shelli Lyons and Francisco Puentes, and graduate Amirah Saldivar.

Students honored by college were: Adam Rowland, business; William McChesney, engineering; Danette Salas, liberal and fine arts; and Crystal Flores, sciences.

Athletes honored were McEverett Powers and Michelle McEllyea, intercollegiate; Rudy Mendez and Brandi Haynes, Bobbie Walker Intramural Athletes of the Year; Matt Mendez, Zebra of the Year; and Jamie McKenzie, Fitness Fanatic Award.

Shane Foley and Shelli Lyons were named Greeks of the Year, and Todd Rathbun, most spirited.

Delma Barrera, Shelli Lyons, Herman Robinson, Amirah Saldivar and Theresa Survillion received the Jane Findling Award, while Golden Feather Awards went to Krista Hartman, Rachael Headrick, Shelli Lyons, Kristy Pacheco and Andraya Young. The Jane Findling Award recognizes top students who have best benefited the university, and best represent the ideal UTSA student leader, through their academic and leadership abilities for the 2001-2002 academic year. The Golden Feather Award recognizes top students who have best benefited the university, and best represent the ideal UTSA student leader, through their academic and leadership abilities during their entire UTSA careers.

Among student organizations, Lambda Chi Alpha was recognized for membership development; Kappa Delta Chi, service activities; UMOJA, cultural awareness; and Phi Alpha Theta, political action.

Faculty member Josephine Mendez-Negrete received the Diane Abdo Registered Student Organization Adviser Award, while Anne Englert and Heather Hubbard Pullen received outstanding staff awards.

UTSA Alumni Association Distinguished Faculty Teaching Awards went to Felix Almaraz and Stephen Swellander.
