Native American artists to discuss their works at UTSA
(April 8, 2002)--The Department of English, Classics and Philosophy is sponsoring the April 8-9 visits to UTSA of two Native American artists to share their thought provoking works of art.
Award-winning filmmaker and journalism Bennie Klain will present his films "The Return of Navajo Boy" and "Yada Yada" from 7-8:30 a.m. Monday, April 8 in the Humanities and Social Sciences Building Room 2.01.76 on the 1604 Campus. The films were featured at the revered Sundance Film Festival.
Nationally recognized storyteller and writer Tim Tingle will demonstrate the Native American oral tradition through a narrative and storytelling performance from 12:30-1:45 p.m., Tuesday, April 9 in Business Building Room 3.03.14 on the 1604 Campus.
Klain's film presentations will be followed by a question-and-answer session during which he will discuss Native American life and the challenges encountered by independent filmmakers. Klain is one of a handful of up-and-coming Native American independent filmmakers. Before he began filmmaking, he was as an award-winning journalist for Navajo Radio. He is a member of the Navajo nation and speaks the Navajo language fluently.

Tingle, a nationally recognized storyteller of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, received the 2001 Contemporary Storyteller of the Year award from the Woodcraft Circle of Native Writers and Storytellers. He composed eight recordings of his stories, three of which won awards from Storytelling World. His most popular work, "The Choctaw Way," features traditional and historical Choctaw stories, as well as chants recorded from the Mississippi Choctaw.
Both events are free and open to the public, and were organized by Debbie
Lopez, associate professor of English, classics and philosophy, as part
of her Native American literature class.
