Minimalist art brings maximum experience at UTSA Satellite Space

(April 23, 2002)--The University of Texas at San Antonio Department of Art presents "Large Abstract Paintings and Monoprints," an exhibit of local artist and master of fine arts degree candidate Russell Scarpulla, through May 4 at the UTSA Satellite Space at the Blue Star Arts Complex, 115 Blue Star, S. Alamo and Probandt.

Throughout the past 25 years of creating art, Scarpulla's work has been shown in Belgium, Italy, Germany, Japan, Paris and New York. As media for his work, Scarpulla uses oil paint and beeswax on stretched linen canvases. The artist feels that living in New York and Europe has afforded him a wealth of experience and provided the platform for his most profound influences.

In describing his work, Scarpulla says that the paintings take on distinct characteristics that are best elaborated by attention to meticulous technique.

"Since my earliest immersion, I have been attracted to the toughness and adventure of abstract expressionism, the pure honesty evident in minimalism, as well as the integrity and modest esthetic offered in arte povera," said Scarpulla.

Gallery hours are 12-6 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Admission is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the UTSA Satellite Space at (210) 212-7146.
