Lecture series presents panel on language and culture
(April 2, 2002)--The Literary and Cultural Studies Lecture Series closes for the year with an outstanding assembly of internationally noted scholars in the panel presentation "Languages in Contact: Global/Local Perspectives." Continuing the series' exploration of the humanities, the presentation is at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, in the John Peace Library Building Regents Room (4.03.12) on the 1604 Campus.
The panel will explore language and cultural relationships in a variety of global settings. Moderated by Maryellen Garcia of UTSA's Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, panelists will include Tania Kouteva of Heinrich Heine University in Duesseldorf, Germany; Carol Myers-Scotton of the University of South Carolina; and Bob Bayley of the UTSA Bilingual Bicultural Studies Program.
Kouteva, visiting UTSA as part of a teacher exchange with Bridget Drinka, UTSA associate professor of English, classics and philosophy, will speak on "Language Contact and Grammaticalization." Myers-Scotton will speak on "Speaking Two at Once: A Feat Bilinguals Manage Every Day." Bayley will talk on "Mexicanos in California and Texas: Is Spanish Maintained?"
The UTSA Literary and Cultural Studies Lecture Series Committee is Bernadette Andrea, Norma Cantu, Bridget Drinka, Maryellen Garcia, Debbie Lopez and Bill Mullen.
The series is supported by the College of Liberal and Fine Arts; Department of English, Classics and Philosophy; and the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures.
