Steve Brown and the SPUD-mobile
UTSA exhibits SPUD-mobile at John Jay High School April 24
(April 15, 2002)University of Texas at San Antonio Assistant Professor Steve Brown will speak on the SPUD-mobile (Spatial Precision Utility Device) precision agriculture cart at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 24 in the John Jay High School library.
Built by Brown and his students, the vehicle will be demonstrated on the
high school's football field after the lecture. Brown will speak to students
enrolled in The Science Academy, an intense math, science and technology program
for students intending to go into the science and engineering fields.
The SPUD-mobile incorporates Global Positioning System (GPS) antennae that
can be used to improve conventional agricultural practices using a computer
and guidance system on a lightweight go-cart body. Precision agriculture techniques
greatly reduce required amounts of fuel, fertilizer, herbicides and pesticides.
Brown's laboratory group is focused on developing low-tech applications that can be used for small farms and in developing countries. Brown has used GPS technology to help Hondurans drill wells to protect their water supplies and is currently working on a study with the City of San Antonio and other agencies that will determine the effects of the existing tree population on air quality, energy consumption and stormwater runoff.
