Students organize 5k event to benefit Animal Defense League

(April 3, 2002)--Five UTSA seniors are hosting the third annual Petco Animal Tracks 5K Run at 8 a.m. Saturday, April 6, with registration beginning at 7 a.m. at the Convocation Center on the 1604 Campus. The 5K benefits the Animal Defense League's "Animals in Crisis" program.

The registration fee for the run is $20 per person. Registration for groups of five or more is $12 per person. Registration for UTSA students, faculty and staff is $12 each, and $10 per person for groups of five or more. Each participant will receive a T-shirt and other giveaways.

Register online at the Petco Animal Tracks 5K Run Web site.

Last year's event raised over $5,000 for the Animal Defense League with more than 400 runners or walkers participating. This year, hopes are high for another successful event, with a goal of $7,000 for the Animal Defense League and 600 runners or walkers.

Each year, Animal Tracks is organized by a new group of UTSA public relations students. This year the event is being organized by Kelly Bambery, Katie Blair, Frederik Darmont, Jennifer Herrin and Margaret Johansen. The event director is Assistant Professor Joseph Massey.

For more information about the event, contact Kelly Bambery at (210) 685-8352.

The Animal Defense League, a no-kill shelter founded in 1934, is centered on saving the lives of animals. The "Animals in Crisis" program helps abused, neglected, injured and homeless animals in need of critical services, such as medical treatment, surgery, rehabilitation or just some tender loving care. Once treatment is complete, the organization works at finding loving homes for the animals.

The Animal Defense League is a non-profit 501(c)3 agency located at 11300 Nacogdoches. For more information about the Animal Defense League, call (210) 655-1481.
