Parking routines change with Academic III Building construction

(Aug. 13, 2003)--Phase I of construction on Academic III Building began this week with BFW Construction installing fencing around the construction site and mobilizing their operations. With the project underway, UTSA visitors, students and staff should expect minor inconveniences due to the contractor blocking off part of parking lot 4 and the circle drive in front of the John Peace Library Building (JPL).

Due to construction of Academic Building III, and the addition of approximately 700 new student parking spaces in Lots 1, 6, 8 and 10, parking Lot 4 has been converted to faculty/staff parking only.

During this time period, disabled drivers will have temporary access to JPL. Additionally, four rows of parking in Lot 4 (metered parking across from JPL and the Business Building) will also be blocked off during Phase I. Driving directions will be posted for drivers wishing to park in Lot 4A.

When Phase I is complete, Lot 4 (from the second entrance in front of JPL to the south side) will be closed. Only the north side of parking Lot 4 will remain open during the project. All reserved, disabled and faculty/staff parking from Lot 4 (south side) and 4A will be relocated to Lot 4 (north side). Lot 4 will be exclusively for 24-hour reserve parking, faculty/staff A & B and handicapped parking. Student parking will be relocated to the new parking lots currently under construction. Approximately 300 new parking spaces are expected to be completed by Aug. 26, 2002.

When Lot 4 (south) and 4A are closed, drivers will need to access JPL through the Business Building (BB) via a pedestrian crosswalk from parking Lot 4 (north) to the BB. Once inside the BB, pedestrians can proceed to the second floor and either use the corridor 2.03 or exit the back door of the BB and turn left into the Sombrilla entrance of the JPL. Alternate access to JPL also includes the bridge walk between the BB and the Humanities and Social Sciences Building (HSS) from Lot 3.

Construction will also affect shuttle bus access. Beginning Aug. 12, 2002, the shuttle bus will not longer stop in front of JPL or the Business Building. The only shuttle stop on the north side of the academic complex will be behind HSS.

Lot 4A will remain temporarily open during Phase I. The Phase I time line is as follows:
Mobilize fencing: Sun., Aug. 11, 2002
Phase I start date: Mon., August 12, 2002
Phase I estimated completion date: Fri., Sept. 6, 2002

A Web page is under development by facilities services that will provide continuing updates on parking disruptions and Academic III Building construction. The site will include maps indicating areas affected by the projects. UTSA Today will announce the opening of the Web site as soon as it is in operation.
