PREP closes summer with July 31 assembly, scholarships

(Aug. 2, 2002)--The 2002 San Antonio Prefreshman Engineering Program (PREP) ended for the summer with the annual Closing Day Assembly in the UTSA Convocation Center. All PREP site campuses were recognized and scholarships were awarded for outstanding scholars.

Families and friends attended to support the participation of the more than 1,300 middle and high school students that completed the eight-week program held on nine college and university campuses in San Antonio.

Arturo Almendarez, Texas Education Agency deputy commissioner for programs and instruction, was keynote speaker for the event. Almendarez encouraged the PREP students to get the most out of their education by taking challenging math and science classes, regardless of negative peer pressure.

Founded in 1979 by UTSA Mathematics Professor Manuel P. Berriozabal, PREP identifies achieving middle and high school students with the interest and potential for careers in science, engineering and technology, and other mathematics-related areas and reinforces them in the pursuit of these fields.

Students receive up to one elective credit toward high school graduation for each successfully completed summer of PREP. Since the program's inception, over 10,000 students have completed at least one summer component.

UTSA PREP scholarship recipients:

Aaron Trevino, Thomas Jefferson High School
Riklin Scholarship

Stephanie Martinez, Devine High School
Hispanic Association of Communications Employees of SBC (HACEMOS) Scholarship

Christopher Compean, Medina Valley High School
Hispanic Association of Communications Employees of SBC (HACEMOS) Scholarship
