UTSA system development team demonstrates 'can-do' approach

(Aug. 23, 2003)--Following a successful trial run of the system by students during spring break, the Banner-2000 student and faculty services system went live for Summer 2002 registration.

A two-year project, implementation of Banner has been incremental since last October. Course catalogs and financial aid services also use the system, with degree auditing and advising services scheduled to come online soon. With the implementation of ASAP/Banner, UTSA discontinues the use of social security numbers as the student ID number. The system also enables students to enter all of their classes at one time rather than entering them individually, as was the procedure with the previous system.

""I am especially proud of how well the implementation has gone overall. It further demonstrates the 'can-do' attitude of the UTSA community and the strong commitment to providing the best service we can for our students," said Jeff Noyes, UTSA chief information officer and associate vice president for information technology.

"As the Banner project is coming to its final stages and is in production, I would like to thank all the team members for their hard work and dedication during this long project," he added. "The system represents a major investment by the university, and we are pleased to be able to offer new online services for our students and faculty." he added.

"This is the smoothest implemention of a major information system I've ever seen, and I'm really proud to have worked with such a committed team," said Rosalie Ambrosino, vice president for student affairs. "We've had over 40 UTSA staff working on the implementation of BANNER for almost a year and a half, with an additional hundred or so involved in the implementation at various phases along the way."

She added, "Some UTSA staff have worked almost 24-7 these last few months to meet our deadlines, and we're expecially appreciative of everyone's efforts to go the extra mile. We can already see many positive ways that this new system enhances services for our students."
