Dan Gelo
UTSA appoints interim dean of liberal and fine arts
(August 23, 2002)--Ricardo Romo, president of the University of Texas at San Antonio, announced the appointment of Dan Gelo to the position of interim dean of the College of Liberal and Fine Arts. He replaces Alan Craven, who will remain at the university as a professor of English.
During Craven's tenure as dean, the college has implemented numerous new degree programs, hired additional faculty and improved support for faculty research. During the last 18 months, the college raised more than $2 million for faculty support and student scholarships.
Gelo, who begins his new role at the beginning of the fall semester, is an experienced administrator. "He has served the university well since coming to UTSA in 1988 as both a teacher and a member of the administration," Romo said.
A professor of anthropology, Gelo previously served as division director in the Division of Behavioral and Cultural Sciences prior to his current position as chairman of the Department of Anthropology.
Gelo is recognized for his research in symbolic anthropology, publishing in areas including religion, social organization, language, folklore and music. He is the recipient of the Chancellor's Council Outstanding Teaching Award and the President's Distinguished Achievement Award for Creative Activities.
The College of Liberal and Fine Arts (COLFA) employs the largest number of
faculty at UTSA, which includes six colleges and the School of Architecture.
COLFA includes ten departments: anthropology; art and art history; communication;
English, classics, and philosophy; history; modern languages and literatures;
music; political science and geography; psychology; and sociology.
