Athletics names associate head coach of men's basketball
(Aug. 6, 2002)--After five years of serving as an assistant men's basketball coach at the University of Texas at San Antonio, Owen Miller has been promoted to associate head coach, it was announced by head coach Tim Carter.
"We have been able to build a solid program here at UTSA because of the continuity of our staff," said Carter, who is beginning his school-record eighth season as head coach at UTSA. "Owen has been a major part of what we have accomplished here and I felt it was certainly time to reward him for his achievements and loyalty. He has been a major part of our recruiting efforts, and has done a great job with the players once they arrive on campus."
Miller came to San Antonio in September 1997 from the highly successful Mississippi State University basketball program, which participated in the 1996 Final Four. Since then, he has played an integral part in building the Roadrunners program, including recruiting, scouting and working with UTSA's perimeter players.
Prior to coming to San Antonio, Miller spent three years working under head coach Richard Williams at Mississippi State. In his first two seasons as assistant coach at Mississippi State, Miller helped guide the 1995 Bulldogs to a Sweet 16 appearance and an NCAA Final Four appearance in 1996. Also during his three-year stint in Starkville, Miller had been part of back-to-back SEC Western Division Championship clubs in 1995 and 1996, as well as a school-first SEC Tournament title team three years ago.
Prior to his arrival at Mississippi State, Miller completed his collegiate playing career in 1994 at Mississippi College, ranking as the club's second-leading scorer (14.3 ppg) and top three-point shooter (37 percent) as a senior. Before transferring to Mississippi, Miller spent his first two college campaigns at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. During his freshman year with the Cardinals, Miller averaged 7.1 points and 2.0 rebounds per game as a 12-game starter.
Before his college playing days, Miller was a three-year letterman and two-year starter at Gulfport (Miss.) High School. During his sophomore and junior prep campaigns, Miller teamed in the GHS backcourt with Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf (formerly Chris Jackson) of the NBA's Sacramento Kings by way of Louisiana State University. Miller and Jackson formed the starting backcourt for the Admirals' 1987-88 Mississippi 5A state championship team.
Miller, 31, earned his bachelor's degree in communication from Mississippi
College in 1994.
