New fiscal year brings UTSA parking changes

(August 5, 2002)--When Sept. 1 rolls around, the university's parking facilities will reflect revisions to the parking-permit classification system and at the 1604 Campus, should include several hundred additional spaces. There will also be changes to the parking configurations within the Downtown Campus parking facility. Slight fee increases are also set for some permit categories for both employees and students. Bicycles parked at UTSA now do not require a parking permit.

According to Director of Public Safety/Chief of University Police George Powers, the major change in classification will be the elimination of individually assigned, 24-hour reserved parking spaces, previously designated by signs bearing the assignee's permit number.

Under the revised system, reserved spaces will no longer be individually assigned. Powers said this will eliminate both the need for making and posting individual signs as well as the confusion that has resulted in the past over someone parking in another's assigned, reserved space.

The number of reserved spaces--169 at the 1604 Campus and two at the Downtown Campus--will not change, and the number of reserved permits sold will not exceed the number of reserved spaces.

Lot configurations at the 1604 Campus will remain the same. Lot 6 has the greatest number of reserved spaces (51), while lot 9 has 49; lot 4, 37; lot 3, 21; University Center North, five; West Campus, one; lot 1, two; and Roderick Key, one. Thirty-two metered spaces will also be added to lot 6.

At the Downtown Campus, the two 24-hour reserved spaces had been at the Durango Loop lot, but are being relocated to the on-campus parking garage facility.

While individually assigned spaces will no longer be available, Powers said the university will require reserved permit holders to request a specific lot, which would be designated by a sticker affixed to the parking-permit hangtag.

"Either way, the reserved spots will be on a first-come, first-served basis," said Powers.

Downtown Campus parking facility reconfigurations

In addition to the relocation of the two reserved spots to the parking garage, the following changes are being implemented at the Downtown Campus:

--designated parking for garage permit-holders will move from the sub-levels to the entry level;
--the eight designated spaces for people with disabilities will move from entry level to the top level;
--metered parking in the Durango Loop lot will be eliminated, with the 18 designated spaces moving to the top level of the garage;
--30 faculty/staff A permit spaces will be relocated to the sub-levels of the garage; and,
--spaces freed up in the Durango Loop lot by moving metered and faculty/staff A parking to the garage will be redesignated as student general parking.

Additional spaces at 1604

Powers said a minimum of 500 additional spaces will be available at the 1604 Campus this fall. Lots 8 and 6 are being expanded to include another 228 and 285 spaces, respectively. A new lot, under construction just south of lot 1A, would add another 199 spaces.

Visitors to campus

New signage aimed at visitors is planned for entrances to the 1604 Campus. Visitors are asked to check with the information booth for parking permits and assistance.

If a department or office has advance notice of visitors who will be parking on the Tri-Campuses, they should provide the details to Parking Manager Roger Terry or Chief George Powers via e-mail. This will allow for university police to prepare and issue temporary parking permits or to make other special parking arrangements, as needed.
