National engineering honor society installed at UTSA
(August 5, 2002)--The University of Texas at San Antonio was chosen as the location for a new chapter of the national engineering honor society Tau Beta Pi. The Texas Mu Chapter of Tau Beta Pi was officially installed at a March 2 ceremony held on the 1604 Campus. Lori Nerio, an engineering student at UTSA was named president, and a formal election was held to select the chapters first officers and advisers. To become eligible for a collegiate chapter, universities must have at least three ABET-accredited engineering programs with a minimum of 40 engineering graduates per year before going through a lengthy petitioning process.
Jerome Atkins, executive councillor; James Froula, secretary-treasurer; and Daniel Kamat, district 10 director for Tau Beta Pi, were all in attendance. Texas Mu charter members included one eminent engineer, College of Engineering Dean Zorica Pantic-Tanner, nine alumni and 24 engineering students. Among those welcoming these new members to Tau Beta Pi was the principal advisor Cheryl Schrader, associate dean of graduate studies and research for the college.
"Our goals are greater than simply recognizing outstanding engineers. We believe that technical knowledge alone is not enough preparation for an engineer in our complex world, " said Schrader. By promoting an awareness of history and future potential, Tau Beta Pi prepares engineers to be responsive to others and to be leaders in their communities."
The Tau Beta Pi has over 450,000 members and 225 collegiate chapters.
