UTSA to conduct test preparation workshops this fall

(August 5, 2002)--The University of Texas at San Antonio Office of K-16 Initiatives and Honors College will offer pre-college test preparation workshops at the Downtown Campus for the SAT and ACT. There will also be preparation workshops at the Downtown Campus for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT).

The SAT workshop will be 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, and the ACT workshop will be 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 5. Participants at each workshop will receive six hours of general test-taking strategies plus mathematics and verbal strategies appropriate for the SAT and/or ACT. The cost is $55 per student and space is limited. Lunch is not included in the registration fee. To register, call (210) 458-2769.

There will be two GRE workshop series. One will meet 7-9 p.m. Thursdays Sept. 3-Oct.31, and the second will meet 9 a.m.-noon Saturdays Oct. 19-Nov. 23. Two GMAT workshop series will also be offered, with the first meeting 7-9 p.m. Tuesdays Sept. 3-Oct. 29, and the second, 6-8 p.m. Thursdays Sept. 5-Oct. 31.

Each GRE and GMAT workshop comprises18 hours of instruction on general test-taking and verbal, mathematics and writing strategies. The cost for each is $279, plus textbook cost. This reflects a $100 increase in the GRE course fee, resulting from a change made to the exam by the Educational Testing Service. Effective October 2002, the GRE will add a writing section and drop the analytical section. To prepare students, six hours of instruction on writing strategies have been added, necessitating the fee increase.

The workshops are offered as part of the UTSA Office of K-16 Initiatives and Honors College community education and professional development initiative. For more information, call (210) 458-2769 or visit the K-16 office, located in Buena Vista Street Building Room 2.308 at the Downtown Campus.
