Fall Convocation gathers UTSA community to open year
(Aug. 28, 2002)--The first UTSA Fall Convocation brought students, faculty and staff to the Convocation Center on the 1604 Campus to start off the new school year with best wishes and encouragement. UTSA community members also gathered at the Downtown Campus to watch a simulcast of the ceremony in the Distance Learning lab. The event is part of Week of Welcome, which continues through Aug. 29.
Faculty and staff wearing academic regalia and their orange and blue school colors entered in a procession to open the ceremony. Provost Guy Bailey introduced the singing of the national anthem and short addresses by President Ricardo Romo, Student Government Association President Melissa Killen, UTSA Alumni Association President R. Rene Escobedo, and Vice President for Student Affairs Rosalie Ambrosino. The event closed with singing of the UTSA alma mater, "Hail UTSA."
UTSA's Week of Welcome continues through Aug. 29. with events including the MTV "Real World" cast at the Howdy Rowdy Bash (Aug. 29). The ceremony was followed by college receptions at the 1604 and Downtown campuses.
MTV "Real World" cast members will come to the UTSA 1604 Campus Convocation Center at 7 p.m. Aug. 29. Sponsored by CAB and the Learning Communities program, the group will discuss issues including diversity, multiculturalism and relationships. The former cast members of the popular program will also answer questions from the audience about themselves and the show, followed by the Howdy Rowdy Bash. VOICES is sponsoring a school supplies drive during the event. Organization members remind participants to bring school supplies to the event to donate. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
