UTSA officials discuss partnerships with Air Intelligence Agency

(Dec. 12, 2002)-A group of University of Texas at San Antonio officials, including President Ricardo Romo and Provost Guy Bailey recently met with officials at the Air Force's Air Intelligence Agency to discuss current and proposed partnerships between the two organizations.

Pictured above at center, Maj. Gen. Paul Lebras hosted the UTSA team. Proposed partnerships include joint research projects and internships for UTSA students.

The National Security Agency has designated UTSA as a Center for Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education. The designation means the university's curriculum and faculty meet or exceed NSA standards to teach information-assurance security. It also makes UTSA eligible to apply for grants from the NSA and the National Science Foundation. UTSA is one of 36 universities in the nation with the Center for Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education designation and is the only one in Texas.

The UTSA Center for Infrastructure Assurance and Security (CIAS) provides students and the community the opportunity to expand research in intrusion detection, steganography, biometrics, wireless encryption and Dark Screen, a regional effort to avert cyber-terrorism. New areas, such as decision support systems, user display systems and the SCADA system, will be added to the research conducted by CIAS.

The center recently received a major boost from the Department of Defense Appropriations Conference Report for fiscal year 2003, thanks to efforts by U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison and U.S. Rep. Henry Bonilla. CIAS will receive $3.5 million, successfully secured by Bonilla, a senior member of the Appropriations Committee and a member of the Defense and Foreign Operations Appropriations Subcommittees.

For more information, visit the Center for Infrastructure Assurance and Security Web site.
