UTSA donates unclaimed cell phones to help battered women
(Dec. 17, 2002)--Sixteen mobile phones lost on the UTSA 1604 Campus will be donated to the the Battered Women's Shelter of San Antonio.
The telephones were turned in to the university police department where they remained for 90 days in case owners might want to claim them. After the 90 days, they were taken to the Central Receiving Warehouse on West Campus where they remained until they were put up for bid in last week's surplus auction. When no bids were made on the phones and they were destined for the disposal bin, Larry Simpson, procurement assistant in purchasing, came up with the idea of donating them to the shelter.
Even though the cell phones do not have an operating service contract, a charged battery and the 9-1-1 function still would allow abused women to contact authorities for help.
"Instead of throwing them away, we thought we should put them to good use, " said Gary Lott, UTSA business manager.
To donate to the shelter, call Brenda Balcar at (210) 930-3669.
