Four business faculty receive advisory council awards
(Dec. 9, 2002)--Four faculty members were honored at the annual University of Texas at San Antonio College of Business Advisory Council Faculty Awards Ceremony.
John Merrifield, professor of economics, was the recipient of the Col. Jean Migliorino and Lt. Col. Philip Piccione Endowed Research Award. Over the last seven years, he has been one of the college's top researchers in terms of quantity and quality. Merrifield published three articles in 2002 and has five additional papers submitted to journals for consideration on the topics of school vouchers and recycling. Most recently, Merrifield published the book "The School Choice Wars."
The recipient of this year's Endowed 1969 Commemorative Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence in Business is Robin Radtke. Radtke, associate professor of accounting, teaches a variety of courses in the college. She has received evaluations that greatly exceed the average for her department, the college and the university. Her classes are well organized, and she utilizes a variety of techniques to assist her students in learning the material.
Ram Tripathi, professor of management science and statistics, was honored with the Patrick J. Clynes Service Award. During his 25-year tenure at UTSA, he has served on most of the major university and college committees. He chaired the college's statistics search committee through Spring 2002, coordinates the statistics laboratory and is active in the American Statistical Association. During the last two years, he has worked diligently to establish a bachelor's and master's degree program in statistics.
The college's premiere teaching award, the E. Lou Curry Teaching Excellence Award, was presented to Ken Weiher, associate professor of economics. The E. Lou Curry Award is presented in memory of Lou Curry, one of the most respected faculty members in the college, who passed away in 1995. Weiher teaches in the undergraduate program as well as in the college's professional programs. His courses include Aggregate Economics, Money and Banking, History of Economic Thought and U.S. Economic History. Recognized as an outstanding educator, Ken receives superb teaching evaluations but more importantly has the ability to ignite students interest in these subjects.
UTSA's College of Business is accredited by AACSB International, The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. It is one of the 40 largest business schools in the nation with more than 5,100 students enrolled.
