Professors publish book on management in knowledge economy

(Dec. 6, 2002)--UTSA management professors Mark Lengnick-Hall and Cynthia Lengnick-Hall have recently published "Human Resource Management in the Knowledge Economy" by Berrett-Koehler Publishers, Inc.

Their book examines how human resource management must change if it is to remain a vital part of an organization. The Lengnick-Halls show how human resource departments can move beyond a simple operational focus of attracting, selecting, developing, retaining and using employees to a more strategic focus on managing human capital and managing knowledge.

The book identifies the most important features of the knowledge economy and details four new roles human resources must adopt in order to help organizations succeed in this new environment: human capital steward, knowledge facilitator, relationship builder and rapid deployment specialist.

Examples from leading-edge businesses show how these roles operate in the real world, and the book offers tips on how human resource management can evolve to meet the increasing demands of organizations for sources of competitive advantage.

The Lengnick-Halls are professors of management in UTSA's College of Business. Mark Lengnick-Hall co-authored two previous books: "Compensation Decision Making: A Computer-Based Approach" and "Interactive Human Resource Management and Strategic Planning." Cynthia Lengnick-Hall co-authored "Experiencing Quality and Interactive Human Resource Management and Strategic Planning."

The UTSA College of Business is accredited by AACSB International, The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. It is one of the 40 largest business schools in the nation with more than 5,100 students enrolled.
