John Montford
San Antonian selected as chair of College for All Texans Foundation
(Dec. 11, 2002)--John Montford, president of SBC Southwestern Bell and a former university chancellor and state senator, has been named chairman of the Board of Trustees for the College for All Texans Foundation: Closing the Gaps.
"Mr. Montford brings unique knowledge and experience in the educational, business and political communities that will provide the leadership needed to help the foundation close the gaps in Texas higher education," said Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Chair Pam Willeford.
Montford was a Texas state senator for 14 years, serving as chair of the Senate Finance Committee and the Senate State Affairs Committee. Following his legislative service, he was chancellor of the Texas Tech University System from 1996 to 2001, when he joined SBC Communications.
The College for All Texans Foundation: Closing the Gaps was established by Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board members to provide fund-raising and other support for the "College for Texans" public awareness and motivational campaign to increase higher education participation and success throughout Texas. Through a broad outreach effort, the campaign will provide students, their parents and others with information about the preparation needed to participate and succeed in college and how to find financial aid or otherwise pay for college.
The 77th Texas Legislature authorized the Coordinating Board to carry out the campaign, which kicked off Nov. 12-15, as part of the state's "Closing the Gaps by 2015" education plan.
"Closing the Gaps by 2015" has four goals: to close the gaps in higher education participation, success, excellence, and research within Texas and in comparison with other states. The participation goal is to enroll an additional 300,000 academically prepared students -- beyond the 200,000 additional students expected based on past trends -- by 2015. The success goal is to increase by 50 percent the number of degrees and certificates awarded by 2015. Reaching these goals will ensure that the state has the educated people it needs for a strong economy and high quality of life for all Texans.
