Commencement Close-up: Special meaning to unique pairs

(Dec. 16, 2002)--The University of Texas at San Antonio Fall 2002 Commencement ceremonies provided great memories for those who participated, but for some there was an extra special meaning. You might say that 18 of the graduates were twice as excited to graduate as their classmates.

Last weekend's event included nine pairs among the 2,100+ UTSA graduates. Among the crowd were two pairs of husbands and wives, three pairs of brothers and sisters, two pairs of twin brothers, one pair of twin sisters and one mother-daughter duo.

Alma Rosa Zambrano, who has taught physics and chemistry at Jefferson High School for the past five years, decided to pursue her master's degree to complement her bachelor's from the University of Nuevo Leon in Mexico. She was awarded her degree Saturday, while her daughter, also named Alma Rosa Zambrano, walked down the aisle to receive her bachelor's degree. The younger Alma plans to get a job while working toward her master's degree.

The complete list of pairs follows.
