Sons of the Republic of Texas presents award to Quirarte

(Dec. 11, 2002)--UTSA Professor Emeritus Jacinto Quirarte received the Sons of the Republic of Texas Presidio La Bahia Award for his book "Art and Architecture of Texas Missions" Saturday, Dec. 7.

Quirarte, whose area of expertise is history of art and criticism, has published extensively in both the pre-Columbian and contemporary Mexican American fields. He also serves on the editorial advisory board of Latin American Art. Quirarte received his Ph.D. from the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico.

The Presidio La Bahia Award was established as an annual literary award on April 22, 1968, through the generosity of Kathryn Stoner O'Conner. The Kathryn Stoner O'Connor Foundation was responsible for restoring the Presidio La Bahia near Goliad and establishing it as a museum and a Texas shrine.

The purpose of the award is to promote suitable preservation of relics, and appropriate dissemination of data and research of Texas heritage with particular attention to the Spanish Colonial period. Material can be submitted concerning the influence of Spanish Colonial heritage on Texas culture, laws, customs, language, religion, architecture, art and related fields.
