(Dec. 16, 2002)--The UTSA Police Department joins area law enforcement agencies in reminding all San Antonians to be aware of their surroundings and to take special care during the shopping rush.

During the year-end holidays, people are often busy and excited, but that doesn't mean we have to be careless. The following crime prevention tips are offered to help everyone enjoy a safe and happy holiday season.

For information on this and other personal safety programs, call the UTSA Police Department crime prevention office at (210) 458-4227.

10 rules for safer shopping this holiday season

  1. Have your car or house keys in hand before you leave the store or your vehicle.
  2. Lock your doors immediately after entering your vehicle or house.
  3. Shop with a friend or relative, when possible.
  4. Avoid unlit or poorly lit parking lots, no matter how convenient.
  5. Walk with determination and request assistance from store or mall security personnel if you feel threatened or have vehicle problems.
  6. Don't linger in your car in parking lots.
  7. If you notice anything suspicious, call police.
  8. If you suspect someone has followed you from a store, don't drive immediately home -- go to the nearest police station.
  9. Avoid storing packages, parcels or a purse in view of passersby, either in your vehicle or at your home.
  10. If you are assaulted by a would-be carjacker or mugger, surrender your vehicle or parcels.
