Engineering associate dean to lead international organization

(Dec. 4, 2002)--Cheryl Schrader, associate dean for graduate studies and research in the College of Engineering, will be officially installed Dec. 11 as president of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Control Systems Society (CSS).

With an international membership of over 10,000, CSS serves as a scientific, engineering, and professional organization dedicated to the advancement of the theory and practice of systems and control in engineering.

Schrader, an active CSS member for over 20 years and CSS board member for almost a decade, is looking forward to her one-year term as president.

"In this position, I will be meeting prospective students and distinguished faculty worldwide, which will present opportunities to promote UTSA and the educational programs offered at the university," said Schrader. "In addition, many corporate and industry leaders are CSS members, which presents a unique opportunity to promote our community, not to mention our engineering graduates."

As president, Schrader will deliver presentations in England, Japan and Turkey this year and will prepare a bi-monthly column for the CSS magazine, the most highly cited journal in the control field. In her column, she intends to introduce readers to San Antonio and other Texas treasures with which many people may not be familiar.

To help prepare for the position, Schrader served as president-elect of the CSS this year, in addition to her duties as an administrator and educator at UTSA. However, even with these responsibilities she is eager to try new things. She recently developed a Web-based distance learning course, which she offered to thirty electrical engineering graduate students.

To prepare for the class, Schrader participated in a two-week Web CT online instruction class sponsored by the UTSA provost’s office. She enjoyed the experience so much she is now helping the College of Engineering develop additional Web-based distance learning courses.
