College of Business hosts graduate program information session March 4
(Feb. 22, 2002)--UTSA's College of Business is hosting an information session for its doctoral program in business administration at 5:30 p.m. Monday, March 4 in Business Building Room 4.02.10. The session is free and open to the public.
The program, which was approved last month, would prepare students for successful careers performing teaching, research and service as faculty members in business schools.
Areas of concentration for the doctoral program are accounting, finance, information technology and management and organization studies. This full-time integrated program of coursework, colloquia, research and writing will be rich in theoretical knowledge and methodological skill development. Applications are currently being accepted for the Fall 2002 class. Financial support will be available for doctoral candidates.

UTSA literature professor speaks at humanities in medicine retreat
(Feb. 22, 2002)--Steven G. Kellman, UTSA comparative literature professor, will speak Feb. 23 at the Humanities in Medicine Retreat at the Fairmount Hotel on "The Unspeakable in Henry Roth" and will moderate a discussion on the film "The Assault."
The retreat, sponsored by the Texas Academy of Internal Medicine, will explore fiction, poetry and film.
Kellman is an essayist and film critic who contributes regularly to a range of publications, including The American Scholar and The Texas Observer. He is author or editor of over a dozen books, ranging from his most recent, "The Translingual Imagination" (2000), and "Leslie Fiedler and American Culture" (1999) to "The Self-Begetting Novel" (1980). Recipient of the H.L. Mencken Award and three Fullbright positions, Kellman is a director of National Books Critics Circle.

UTSA community issues lecture series focuses on Latinos in baseball
(Feb. 22, 2002)--"In Search of Vincent Nava and Other Mexicano Baseball Stars: A Look at Latino Baseball History, Race and Historiography" will be the topic at the next University of Texas at San Antonio "Critical Community Issues" lecture.
The brown-bag lecture, second in a three-part series held at the Downtown Campus, will be 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. March 6 in Durango Building Room 2.206.
Mario Longoria, community scholar in residence at the UTSA Hispanic Research/Metropolitan Research and Policy Center, will speak. The presentation is free and open to the public. For more information, call (210) 458-2654.

Chemistry department to sponsor March 9 workshop on peer-led team learning
(Feb. 22, 2002)--In conjunction with a review of the sophomore level chemistry curriculum, the Department of Chemistry will host the Peer-Led Team Learning Workshop for science and engineering instructors on Saturday, March 9, 2002.
This NSF-sponsored activity is aimed at enhancing undergraduate instruction. The Organic Curriculum Review Committee invites the participation of local four-year and junior college chemistry faculty. The goal of the workshop is to exchange curriculum information with faculty at the institutions. All College of Science faculty are encouraged to invite nearby faculty in their disciplines.

(Feb. 22, 2002)--Oscar Garcia, representative from Social Security, will present information about benefits and retirement from 1:30-3 p.m. April 3 on the 1604 Campus in the John Peace Library Building Regents Room (4.03.12).

San Antonio police issuing citations for jaywalking
(Feb. 22, 2002)--University Police reminds all members of the Downtown Campus and Tri-Campus communities to obey pedestrian crossing lights and regulations. San Antonio police have begun issuing citations to those who illegally cross intersections adjacent to the Downtown Campus.
To avoid tickets, pedestrians should cross only in the designated crosswalks and with the walk light. Particularly, pedestrians are cautioned not to cross the intersection of S. Pecos-La Trinidad and Durango Boulevard diagonally.
The Texas Traffic Code on J-walking reads as follows: "A pedestrian may cross a roadway intersection diagonally only if and in the manner authorized by a traffic control device, effective Sept. 1, 1995."
The fine for this infraction is $85.
