Cookbook collection adds flavors to food conference
(Feb. 11, 2002)--UTSA Libraries will exhibit books and posters from the Laurie Gruenbeck Mexican Cookbook Collection Feb. 12-25 at the 1604 Campus John Peace Library foyer and the Downtown Campus Library. The exhibition is presented in conjunction with the second interdisciplinary and multicultural conference, "Food Representation in Literature, Film and the Other Arts," Feb. 14-16, at the UTSA Downtown Campus.
The Gruenbeck Mexican Cookbook Collection includes more than 500 cookbooks and books about food in Mexico, Texas and the southwestern United States. Laurie Gruenbeck, a retired City of San Antonio librarian and long-time resident, recently donated the collection to the UTSA Library.
The collection, housed in the Special Collections and Archives department, features local and regional recipes and pre-Hispanic foods in books and book series, including juvenile literature, as well as magazines, posters and ephemera. Titles in the collection include "The True History of Chocolate" by Sophie D. Coe, "Conquista y comida: consecuencias del encuentro de dos mundos" by Janet Long, "South Texas Mexican Cook Book" by San Antonio author Lucy Garza, "Cocina Mexicana; o, Historia gastronomica de la ciudad de Mexico" by Salvador Novo and "Verde" by Mexican master chef Ricardo Munoz Zurita.
The collection is useful for food historians, anthropologists, ethnologists, folklorists, teachers, museum specialists, chefs, restaurant managers, architects, Mexican and U.S. Southwest specialists, and students of Mexican and Spanish literature, as well as the general public.
