Young women invited to expand horizons in science, math
(Feb. 28, 2002)--KMOL-TV Chief Meteorologist Jennifer Broome, UTSA
College of Engineering Dean Zorica Pantic-Tanner and UTSA Athletic
Director Lynn Hickey will be the keynote panelists for the university's
annual "Expanding Your Horizons in Mathematics and Science Conference"
for young women on April 6 at the university's 1604 Campus.
Open to sixth through 12th graders in Bexar County and South Central Texas,
the conference is meant to motivate girls to take math and science courses
to prepare for careers requiring these subjects by bringing them together
with women who currently work in those fields, according to conference coordinator
and UTSA Mathematics Professor Betty Travis.
Two dozen student workshops will be conducted by professional women in science
or math-related careers. Disciplines represented include meteorology, archaeology,
biotechnology, physical therapy, veterinary medicine, nutrition, medicine-physician
assistant, emergency medical service, chemical engineering, legal forensics,
nursing, community health, mechanical design, forensics-federal agents and
botany. There also will be workshops for teachers, counselors and parents.
The Expanding Your Horizons program originated 21 years ago in San Francisco
and was implemented in Texas in 1985 at UTSA. Registration forms are available
from high school math and science teachers, school counselors, by calling
Travis at (210) 458-5556.
A $10 registration fee covers lunch and materials. Space is limited, and
workshops will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. The deadline
for registration is March 15.
