Health Professions Fair Health Professions Fair educates students about career options

(Feb. 22, 2002)--Students interested in pursuing a medical degree had the opportunity to learn what medical school options were available to them at the annual Health Professions Fair held yesterday in the University Center on the 1604 Campus.

Over 50 representatives from medical schools across the country were on hand to explain admissions requirements and programs students could pursue at their institutions.

Some of the representatives traveled from as far away as Massachusetts, Maryland, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana and Ohio.

Erik Garza
, 23-year-old biology major from Corpus Christi, plans to pursue a career in cell biology research. Some of the options he is weighing include financial aid opportunities, mentoring programs and campus locations.

"Everybody has been very helpful answering all my questions, and they have been enthusiastic in explaining what their school programs have to offer," said Garza.

The fair also provided the opportunity for 23-year-old San Antonio native Jason Pfluke to return to his home town, visit with his family, and share his experience at Texas Tech University's Health Science Center. Pfluke is a May 2000 graduate from UTSA and is completing the end of his second year of medical school. He was in the Air Force ROTC program at UTSA and has his medical school bills covered as a member of the military. Pfluke plans to be an anesthesiologist.

The Health Professions Fair was sponsored by the Pre-Med Society, Pre-Health Students, College of Sciences and Career Services.
