Downtown Campus hosts African American Heritage Week events
(Feb. 21, 2002)--The public is invited to the UTSA Downtown Campus observance of African American Heritage Week. Events are co-sponsored by the Campus Activities Board, UMOJA, Department of Communication and Student Leadership and Cultural Programs.
Admission is free to all activities, with the exception of the two-act show Feb. 19-22 in the Buena Vista Street Theater. For more information, call (210) 458-2816.
A schedule of events follows:
Tuesday-Friday, Feb. 19-22
Two one-act performances: "Joice Heth: The Nurse of Giants," an original play by UTSA communication faculty member Phil Hoke; and "Transitions in the Key of Life," original poetry by Ann-Marie Moore, UTSA alumna.
Tickets for performances on Feb. 19, 20 and 21 are $5 each. Admission for the Feb. 22 performance is $20, with proceeds benefiting scholarships for communication students. The benefit performance also includes intermission refreshments. The performances at at 7:30 p.m., Buena Vista Street Building Theater.

Monday, Feb. 25
Opening ceremonies: Singer Mavis Washington will perform the "Black National Anthem." Also featured, musician Willie Bonds and Greg Wilson, who will speak on "Personal Perspectives of African American History." Performance is noon-1 p.m., Durango Building Student Center.
Tuesday, Feb. 26
Poetry readings: Tawfiq Cotmanel, Joshua Glenn, Mao Harris and Lachelle Dixon. Presentation is noon -2 p.m. Durango Building Student Center
Games: Bid whist, spades and dominoes, 3:15-5 p.m., Durango Building Student Center. Sign up to play at information desk.
Tuesday Thursday, Feb. 26-28
Art exhibit: Allee Wallace, African Showcase, Angie Flowers "Afrocentric Appeal" doll collection and other local artists. Frio Street Building Multipurpose Room (1.402)
Wednesday, Feb. 27
Soul Food Extravaganza: Menu: green beans, potato salad, macaroni and cheese, cornbread, fried chicken and candied yams (provided by Burton's Bar-B-Q--Alonzo Boone's Catering); braised cabbage, peach cobbler, chocolate cake, pound cake and a variety of miniature pies (provided by Anne Marie's Catering).
Entertainment: saxophonist J. Anthony Brown and liturgical dancer
