UTSA development officer attains international certification

(Feb. 27, 2002)--Richard Ortega, UTSA associate director of development for special projects, has successfully completed the examination to become a certified fund-raising executive (CFRE).

Conferred through CFRE International, the designation is the only internationally recognized baseline professional credential for philanthropic fundraising executives and reflects not only a designee's practical knowledge but also his/her related accomplishments and overall record of service.

Ortega, who oversees the UTSA Biotechnology Initiative, is the first member of the university's development team to earn this distinction. His achievement was celebrated during this month's meeting of the university's Administrative Planning Council. Vice President for Administration/Interim Vice President for University Advancement Gerard Barloco spoke about Ortega's achievement at the meeting.

"Successful pursuit of certified fund-raising executive status demonstrates to the university, to UTSA's donors, to peers and to the public, the highest level of commitment to professional standards and to the betterment of the field. Through his attainment of this important credential, Richard Ortega demonstrates that he looks for on-going, meaningful professional development and practical ways to evaluate his own work that will help him--and UTSA--to grow."

President Ricardo Romo joined Barloco in congratulating Ortega and presented him with a certificate denoting this milestone. Ortega joined UTSA in 2000 as a development officer for the College of Sciences and College of Engineering. He completed his doctorate in education at the University of New Mexico.
